This is a small selection from his renowned ‘Twilight’ series. These images portray small town America and though they hold a sense of realistic sensibility, they are highly composed, using cinematic lighting, staging and special effects.
He has used the normal and paranormal to create tension, transforming the suburban landscapes into a place of wonder and anxiety.
These elaborate scenes are a masterpiece of imagination. After watching clips from the documentary film of this work, I begin to see that he has a very clear vision and will not stop at nothing less than perfection. Down to the smallest elements in the scene, he will spend what seems like an eternity moving a phone until its just right. This just shows me the level of attention to detail that is required in achieving such images, that and a ridiculous budget.
Some of the sets are custom built for each image using details from the homes in the town and all the models are from the actual town they are shot in. Crewdson would drive around asking people to model for him. I guess in his eyes this just adds to the realism that he envisages.
From these images I want to take away the art of telling a story, or at least the ability to evoke emotion and cause questions to what is going on in the imagery I create.
